A Sewickley Roofer Who Knows Older Homes
Sewickley sits on the Ohio River about 12 miles northwest of downtown Pittsburgh. In 1895 a writer called it the Queen of Suburbs, because the train could reach the city in under half an hour, and the borough now has three historic districts with homes by some of the most prominent local architects of that time. Older houses can have slate, tall chimneys, built in box gutters and steep pitches, and they need a roofer who slows down for them.
Malick Brothers Exteriors is a family owned roofing company based on Perry Highway, about 10 miles by car from the Sewickley borough building. We replaced a large Sewickley roof in July 2025, and our repair division handles slate, tile, flat and shingle roofs as well as box gutters. Every job starts with a free inspection and a written estimate.

Roofing Services for Sewickley Homes
From one slipped slate to a full new roof, these are the services Sewickley and Quaker Valley homeowners call us for.
Recent Roofs In and Near Sewickley
A real Sewickley job, plus two recent roofs in the river towns between our shop and Sewickley. Each one lists the products and colors we installed.
Roofing in Sewickley's Historic Districts
If your house is in one of Sewickley's three historic districts, the borough says all exterior work must follow its Historic Districts ordinance (Chapter 198), and a Certificate of Appropriateness must be issued by the Historic Review Commission and approved by Borough Council before a building permit is issued. Plan for that review before you choose a material or a start date. We can talk through what the review may look at during your estimate.
Slate repair
On many slate roofs the nails and flashing give out before the stone does. Replacing broken slates and failed flashing can keep the original roof working. When a slate roof is past saving, we say so and show you the options.
Box gutters
Built in box gutters sit inside the roof edge, so a leak often shows up as a stain on a wall or ceiling. We repair box gutters and can coat them with silicone, as we did on a Bellevue home in May 2026.
Chimneys and flashing
Older chimneys are a common leak point where they meet the roof. On a Mt. Washington home in April 2025 we installed copper chimney flashing along with a new Atlas roof and a rubber roof section.
Steep lots and access
Hillside lots, long driveways and old trees change how a roof job is staged. We plan where the dumpster, ladders and materials go, cover plantings and sweep the yard with a magnet.
Reviews From Owners of Older Homes
Google reviews, copied word for word.
“ Malick Brothers just completed an extensive restorative and maintenance work on our historic home's roof and gutters. We were impressed with their commitment to the quality of their work. Their crew and project manager were exceptionally professional. We appreciated their attentiveness to the details of the job and their customers' expectations. (they were careful with our landscaping and flowers). We highly recommend Malick Brothers for your roofing needs. ”
David Snuffer
“ We have a 120 year old house that sits on a hillside. Access was difficult but Malick Brothers was able pull it off. Very efficient work and protected our flower beds. Nice job. ”
Dwight Pritchett
“ We had a fantastic experience with them in Dec 2024. We had a chimney leak problem on our back porch. I set up a time for them to stop by for a free estimate. They promptly showed up in the next couple of days. I got a reasonable estimate from them, approved it immediately, and asked them to start the work asap. They scheduled me in about a week out. The work was very professional and completely to my satisfaction. They sent texts/pictures/explanations to tell me what the fix was and how it was done. I definitely plan to use them in the future for all our roofing/siding needs. ”

Sewickley Roofing Questions
What Sewickley homeowners ask before they replace or repair an older roof.
Do you work on homes in Sewickley's historic districts?
Yes. Exterior work in the borough’s three historic districts goes through the Historic Review Commission, and the borough says a Certificate of Appropriateness must be approved before a building permit is issued. That can affect the material, color and details you choose, so raise it early. We can walk the roof with you and talk through the options. Our article on roofing historic Pittsburgh properties covers the common issues.
Can you repair my slate roof instead of replacing it?
Often, yes. Our repair division works on slate, and on many slate roofs the nails and flashing fail before the stone. Replacing broken slates, rebuilding flashing at chimneys and valleys and fixing box gutters can keep a slate roof going. If it is past repair, we will tell you plainly. See our slate roofing page and roof repair service.
How much does a new roof cost in Sewickley?
It depends on the size and pitch of the roof, the material (slate, shingles or metal), how much decking and flashing must be replaced, chimneys and box gutters, and how easy the house is to reach. A historic review can also shape the material choice. We give a free written estimate after we inspect the roof. To spread out the cost, see our financing options.
Do you also serve Sewickley Heights, Edgeworth and the other Quaker Valley towns?
Yes. We work in Sewickley Heights, Edgeworth, Glen Osborne, Leetsdale, Leet Township, Bell Acres and Aleppo Township as well as the borough itself. Our shop on Perry Highway is about 10 miles from the Sewickley borough building, and Route 65 runs from there to Sewickley past our recent jobs in Ben Avon and Emsworth. See every town we serve on our service areas page.
What do you look at during a roof inspection on an older home?
We check the roofing itself (slate, tile or shingles), the flashing where the roof meets chimneys, walls and dormers, valleys, built in box gutters and downspouts, and attic ventilation, and we look inside for signs of past leaks. You get photos of what we find and a plain answer on repair or replacement. Book a free roof inspection before a sale, a historic review or after a storm.
Can you fix leaking box gutters?
Yes. Our repair division handles box gutters, and we can coat them with a silicone roof coating, as we did on a Bellevue home in May 2026. Because box gutters sit inside the roof edge, a leak can rot the fascia and stain inside walls before you notice it from the ground. Read about silicone roof coatings and our gutter services.
Will a new shingle roof look right on an older Sewickley home?
It can. Atlas makes lines that suit older houses, such as StormMaster Shake, which has the look of wood shakes, and Pinnacle Pristine with Scotchgard protection against black algae streaks. Pewter, the gray we used on our 2025 Sewickley roof, is one of many Atlas colors we install. Check the historic review rules first. See asphalt shingle options and upgrading a roof on a Sewickley home.
How can I spot bad roofing work before I pay?
Look for new flashing at chimneys and walls rather than old flashing caulked over, straight shingle lines, clean valleys and a yard swept for nails. Ask for photos of the deck and underlayment before the shingles go on. We send photo updates during the job so you can see the work you cannot see from the ground. Our guide how to spot bad roofing work before you pay in Sewickley goes further.
