What Goes Into a Metal Roof
A metal roof is only as good as the deck under it and the trim around it. Every metal roof we install goes on in these four steps.

We check the decking and replace any soft or rotted boards first.
2. Underlayment
New underlayment covers the whole deck before any panel goes on.
3. Panels
Standing seam panels run eave to ridge and lock at raised seams.

What is the biggest problem with metal roofs?
Most metal roof problems come from the installation, not the metal. Trim and flashing that are poorly fitted at chimneys, valleys and walls can leak, and exposed screws can loosen over time. How long does a metal roof last in Pittsburgh?
A well installed metal roof commonly lasts for decades, often well past the life of an asphalt shingle roof. In Pittsburgh, the freeze and thaw cycles that crack shingles do far less harm to metal panels. What is the difference between standing seam and exposed fastener metal?
Standing seam panels lock together at raised seams, and the fasteners are hidden under the seam, so nothing pierces the face of the roof. Exposed fastener panels are screwed straight through the face, and each screw has a rubber washer that ages. Is a metal roof better than shingles for Pittsburgh winters?
Metal sheds snow and ice faster than shingles, and its interlocked panels give melt water fewer places to get in. Shingles cost less up front and suit most homes, especially if you may move in a few years. If you plan to stay for decades, metal is worth pricing. Will snow slide off a metal roof?
Yes. Smooth metal panels let snow slide off once the sun or attic heat loosens it, which is good for the roof but can surprise you over a door, walkway, deck or driveway. Snow guards are small metal brackets or rails that hold snow in place so it melts off slowly. During your estimate we look at where snow will land and tell you where guards make sense.
Are metal roofs loud when it rains?
Not on a house. The loud metal roof most people remember is a barn or shed with panels screwed over open framing. On a home, the panels sit on solid decking and underlayment, with an insulated attic below, so rain sounds much like it does on a shingle roof. Hail and heavy downpours are a little more noticeable, but most homeowners say they rarely hear it.
Does a metal roof affect WiFi or cell signal?
Your WiFi router sits inside the house, so a metal roof has little effect on WiFi from room to room. Cell signal coming from outside can drop a bit in some homes, the same way it can with foil faced insulation or thick masonry walls. When it does, a signal booster usually solves it. Does a metal roof make my house hotter?
No. Metal panels heat up in direct sun, but they also cool quickly once the sun goes down, and many finishes reflect a good share of sunlight. With a solid deck, underlayment and good attic ventilation, a metal roof doesn't make your living space hotter than a shingle roof. Lighter colors reflect more heat than dark ones. What colors do metal roofs come in?
Standing seam panels come in a wide range of factory finish colors. Can you repair a metal or tin porch roof?
Often, yes. Loose panels, failed seams, worn trim and leaks at flashing can usually be repaired, and many older tin porch roofs can be repaired and resurfaced.
