What is the best roofing material for a Pittsburgh home?
It depends on the house and how long you plan to stay. Most Pittsburgh homes are covered with asphalt shingles, and a complete Atlas shingle system is the right answer for many of them. Metal costs more up front but makes sense when you plan to stay for decades. If you already have natural slate, it's often worth repairing instead of replacing. What is the difference between pitched and flat roofing materials?
Pitched roofs shed water quickly, so overlapping materials like shingles, standing seam metal and slate work well on them. Flat and low slope roofs drain slowly and need a sealed surface instead, such as an EPDM rubber roof or a silicone roof coating. Many Pittsburgh houses have both: a sloped main roof and a flat porch or rear addition.
Is a metal roof better than asphalt shingles?
Neither is better for every home. A metal roof sheds snow fast, stands up to wind and can last for decades, but it costs more up front, so it makes the most sense when you plan to stay in your home. What roofing material goes on a flat porch or rowhouse roof?
For most flat porch, rowhouse and addition roofs we recommend MuleHide .060 EPDM, a single ply rubber membrane that stays flexible through freeze and thaw. If an existing flat roof is worn but still dry underneath, a MuleHide silicone coating can seal it without a tear off. See our EPDM page and silicone coating page for how each one works.
Should I replace my slate roof with shingles?
Not usually. A leaking slate roof often doesn't need to come off, because the trouble is usually a few broken or slipped slates, worn flashing or a failing box gutter. Our repair division fixes those and tells you honestly when the slate is past saving. When it is, we can install a complete Atlas shingle system. Read more on our slate roof repair page.
When does a roof coating make sense instead of a new roof?
A silicone coating fits a flat roof that's worn but still dry underneath. It cures into one seamless layer over the existing roof with no tear off. If the roof is soaked, rotted or failing in many places, a new roof is the better choice. We check for wet insulation and soft spots first, then tell you which one makes sense. Do you install TPO, PVC or built up roofs?
Yes. On commercial buildings we also install TPO, PVC and built up roofing systems, along with EPDM and MuleHide silicone coatings. Every building is different, so we recommend a system after we inspect the roof, the drainage and how the building is used. See our commercial roofing services for more.
