Owens Corning Terra Cotta shingles are one of the few asphalt shingle colors that read as a true red clay tone instead of brown, gray or black. Homeowners search for them because they want a roof with warmth and real color, and because the look recalls Mediterranean clay tile without the weight or the cost structure of tile. This guide explains what the Terra Cotta color actually looks like on a roof, which Pittsburgh house styles it suits, how the TruDefinition Duration shingle performs in our weather, and which Atlas colors come closest if you want the warm look on an Atlas system with our 50 year warranty.

We are Malick Brothers Exteriors, a family owned roofing company founded in 2022 by Ryan Malick with our shop at 500 Perry Highway in West View. Our main shingle line is Atlas, because as an AtlasPro+ Platinum Select contractor we can offer the Atlas 50 year warranty on complete Atlas roof systems. We also install Owens Corning on request, so if Terra Cotta is the color you want, we can build the roof around it. Either way the job starts with a free written estimate for asphalt shingle roofing and a look at sample boards on your own house, not under showroom lights.

What Owens Corning Terra Cotta shingles look like

Terra Cotta is a color in the Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration line. TruDefinition is the color platform Owens Corning uses on its laminated architectural shingles. Each shingle blends several granule shades so the roof reads with depth and shadow lines rather than one flat tone. In Terra Cotta the blend runs from a soft orange clay through a deeper rust to a dark brown shadow granule.

From the street the roof reads as a warm, weathered red brown. It is not a fire engine red and it is not the bright orange of new Spanish barrel tile. Think of an old clay flowerpot that has spent a few summers outside. The darker granules keep it from looking loud, and the lighter ones keep it from going muddy in low winter light.

A few practical notes from looking at warm colored roofs around Pittsburgh:

  • Terra Cotta looks redder on a bright south facing slope and browner on a shaded north slope. Walk around the house with the sample board, not just the front.
  • It shows dirt and pollen less than a light gray roof but shows black algae streaks more than a dark roof. The StreakGuard algae resistance on Duration shingles matters here.
  • It pairs with warm trim colors. Bright white trim works. Cool gray or blue trim fights it.

Which Pittsburgh houses suit a terra cotta roof

Pittsburgh is a brick town, and the brick decides what roof color works. A red clay roof on red brick usually looks like too much of one thing. The houses where Terra Cotta shines are the ones that were built to carry it.

Stucco and Spanish or Mediterranean revival homes

The 1920s and 1930s left pockets of stucco homes with arched windows, wrought iron and low pitched roofs through Mt. Lebanon, Squirrel Hill, Highland Park and parts of the North Hills. Many of these were built for clay tile, and a good number have been reroofed in gray or black shingles that make the house look unfinished. Terra Cotta on cream, tan or white stucco brings the original intent back at shingle weight. Tile is heavy, and many of these roof decks were never framed for it, so a shingle in a clay tone is the practical path.

Tan, buff and blond brick

Buff brick ranches and split levels from the 1950s and 1960s are everywhere in Ross Township, McCandless, Shaler and Bethel Park. Most wear a brown or weathered wood roof. Terra Cotta on buff brick is a classic warm pairing that makes the brick look intentional instead of plain. Keep the trim white or cream.

Light siding and board and batten

White, cream, sage or pale yellow siding takes a terra cotta roof well. It is a popular combination on farmhouse style homes in Cranberry Township and Mars. Darker siding in charcoal or navy generally does not.

Where to be careful

  • Red or orange brick: the roof and the walls compete. Burnt Hickory or Weathered Wood is usually the better warm choice.
  • Steep, highly visible roofs: the roof becomes most of what you see from the street, so a bold color is a bigger commitment. Look at it from across the street.
  • Homeowner association rules in some Cranberry and Wexford plans limit roof colors. Check before you order.

How the TruDefinition Duration shingle performs in Pittsburgh weather

Color is why people search for this shingle. The reason to actually buy it is what is underneath the color. The Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration shingle is a laminated architectural shingle with a few features that matter on a Western Pennsylvania roof. Specifications below come from Owens Corning.

  • SureNail Technology. A woven reinforcing fabric is built into the nailing line. The nail goes through the fabric and the two laminated layers at once, which Owens Corning calls Triple Layer Protection. It gives the installer a clear nailing target and gives the shingle a wider, stronger common bond area. That is what holds the shingle down when a spring storm comes across the Ohio River valley.
  • 130 MPH limited wind warranty. Pittsburgh does not see hurricanes, but the straight line winds that come with summer thunderstorms and the gusts on exposed hilltop lots in McCandless and Franklin Park are enough to lift a poorly nailed shingle.
  • StreakGuard algae resistance. Copper containing granules in the blend inhibit the blue green algae that leaves black streaks on shaded roofs. Our humid summers and tree cover in neighborhoods like Fox Chapel and Sewickley make this a real issue, and a streaked terra cotta roof looks worse than a streaked gray one.
  • Limited lifetime warranty. Owens Corning backs the shingle with a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner, with terms that depend on registration and installation. Ask for the warranty document in writing before you sign.

The shingle is only part of the roof. Ice and water barrier at the eaves and in the valleys, synthetic underlayment, proper intake and exhaust ventilation and correct flashing at chimneys and walls decide whether any shingle lasts. Freeze and thaw cycles are what kill roofs here, not heat.

Owens Corning Terra Cotta versus the closest Atlas colors

Most of the roofs we install are Atlas Pinnacle Pristine, because the complete Atlas system of shingles, underlayment and ventilation lets us offer the Atlas 50 year warranty, and Pinnacle Pristine carries Scotchgard Protector against algae streaks. Atlas does not make a color named Terra Cotta. If you like the warm look but want the Atlas warranty, these are the colors we have installed locally that come closest.

Color Line How it compares to Terra Cotta Where we have installed it
Owens Corning Terra Cotta TruDefinition Duration The true red clay tone. Reddest of the group. Available on request
Atlas Copper Canyon Pinnacle Pristine Closest match. A reddish brown with copper highlights, a half step browner and less orange than Terra Cotta. Allison Park, April 2026
Atlas Burnt Hickory Pinnacle Pristine Warm medium brown with red undertones. Reads brown from the street, not red. Works on red brick where Terra Cotta would not. Ben Avon, January 2026
Atlas Morning Harvest Pinnacle Pristine A golden tan and brown blend. Warm but not red. Good on buff brick when a clay roof feels too strong. Allison Park and Ross Township, 2026
Atlas Weathered Wood Pinnacle Pristine Neutral brown gray. The safe choice, with no red in it. Squirrel Hill, January 2026

We bring full size sample boards of each of these to the estimate. A two inch chip on a brochure page tells you almost nothing about a roof color. Hold the board against the brick, in sun and in shade, and look at it from the sidewalk.

Owens Corning or Atlas: which should you pick?

Both are good shingles when installed correctly. The honest difference for our customers comes down to two things.

  • Color. If Terra Cotta is the color, Owens Corning is the shingle. No Atlas color is a true red clay. We will install it and stand behind the work with our own labor warranty.
  • System warranty. If the color choice is flexible, a complete Atlas system installed by us comes with the Atlas 50 year warranty, which is the strongest manufacturer coverage we can offer. Copper Canyon gets you most of the warm look with that coverage.

Whichever shingle you choose, make sure your contractor is registered with the state. You can check any Pennsylvania roofer at the PA Attorney General HIC lookup. Our registration is PA174918, and we are BBB A+ accredited.

What drives the cost of a terra cotta shingle roof

We do not publish prices because no two roofs are the same. What moves the number on a Terra Cotta roof is the same as any architectural shingle roof: the square footage and pitch, how many layers of old roofing come off, the condition of the decking once it is exposed, the number of valleys, chimneys and skylights to flash, ventilation changes, and whether gutters, soffit or fascia are replaced at the same time. Color itself is rarely the deciding factor in cost within a shingle line. The free written estimate spells out every item so you can compare it line by line. If you would rather spread the cost out, we offer financing on complete roof replacements.

Frequently asked questions

Is Owens Corning Terra Cotta a red or a brown shingle?

It is a red clay tone with brown shadow granules. In direct sun it reads as a weathered brick red or rust. In shade or overcast light it leans toward reddish brown. It is clearly redder than any standard brown shingle, which is exactly why people choose it.

Does Owens Corning Terra Cotta fade?

All asphalt shingles lose some depth of color over decades as the granules weather. Owens Corning uses ceramic coated granules on the TruDefinition Duration line, which hold color well. The bigger visual risk in Pittsburgh is algae streaking on shaded slopes, which the StreakGuard algae resistance is designed to limit.

Are terra cotta shingles more expensive than other colors?

Within the TruDefinition Duration line the color usually does not change the shingle cost. What changes the cost of the roof is size, pitch, tear off, decking repairs, flashing and ventilation. A written estimate separates all of those so you can see what you are paying for.

Does Malick Brothers install Owens Corning shingles?

Yes, on request. Our primary line is Atlas because we are an AtlasPro+ Platinum Select contractor and can offer the Atlas 50 year warranty on complete Atlas systems. When a customer wants a color that Atlas does not make, such as Terra Cotta, we install Owens Corning and back the installation with our labor warranty.

What Atlas color is closest to Owens Corning Terra Cotta?

Atlas Copper Canyon in the Pinnacle Pristine line is the closest. It is a reddish brown with copper highlights, slightly browner and less orange than Terra Cotta. Burnt Hickory is the next warm option if you want brown with a red undertone rather than a red roof.

Can I put Terra Cotta shingles on a red brick house?

You can, but most homeowners who try the sample board against red brick decide against it because the two reds fight. Terra Cotta works best on stucco, buff or tan brick, stone and light siding. On red brick, Burnt Hickory or Weathered Wood gives warmth without the clash.
