Roofing in Fox Chapel, PA, for Larger Homes
Fox Chapel is a borough of about 5,300 people in Allegheny County, roughly 6 miles northeast of downtown Pittsburgh, and it has been its own municipality since 1934. Nearly every home there's a detached single family house, and the typical one is big: the Census Bureau puts the median at 10 rooms, against about 6 for Allegheny County as a whole. If you're looking for roofing in Fox Chapel, PA, that size matters, because a bigger house usually means more roof planes, more valleys and more chimney and wall flashing to get right.
Malick Brothers Exteriors is a family owned roofer based at 500 Perry Highway, about 11 miles by road from the middle of Fox Chapel. We haven't yet posted a finished job inside the borough, so this page doesn't pretend otherwise. The roofs shown below are our own recent work in nearby communities, each labeled with its real town, and every Fox Chapel roof we take on starts the same way they did: a free inspection and a written estimate.

Nearby: Weathered Wood on an older Squirrel Hill home

What Fox Chapel Roofs Need
Census figures for Fox Chapel show about 1,800 homes, roughly nine in ten of them detached houses and about nine in ten lived in by their owners. The median home was built around 1969, but the range is wide: close to one in five dates from 1939 or earlier, and most of the rest went up between the 1940s and the 1990s. Permit rules come from the borough, so we confirm them before any work begins.
Big roofs, many planes
With a median of 10 rooms, many Fox Chapel houses carry long hips, wings, dormers and attached garages. Each valley and wall joint is a likely leak point, so each gets new flashing and ice and water protection on a replacement.
Older slate
Homes built before 1940 are more likely to have slate, and old slate often fails at the nails and flashing before the stone wears out. We repair slate, and when a homeowner chooses to replace it we remove it and clean up after.
Chimneys
Larger and older homes often have more than one chimney. Step and counter flashing around them is where many leaks start, and we replace it rather than sealing over worn metal.
Low slope sections
Porch roofs, additions and garage connectors are often too flat for shingles. Those areas need a membrane such as EPDM, tied carefully into the sloped roof.
What Homeowners Say About Flashing and Slate
Google reviews, copied word for word.
“ These guys are fantastic. Their crew HUSTLES all day long. They removed 100 year old slate from my roof and cleaned up every speck of it! They left my yard in great shape. The roof looks good. Their flashing work is beautiful. Clint, the foreman, is easy to work with and his drone shots of the work being performed (sent to you throughout the day) is fantastic. You can literally see them doing the work and you can see they're doing everything they said they would do. I'd hire them again in a heartbeat! ”

“ Hands down, most transparent, efficient and professional roofing company in the Pittsburgh area. Ryan Malick & Clint (project manager) gave me live updates via iPhone videos while I was at work, and their team completed my 3100 sq ft roof in 8 hours. I have skylights and a chimney & they reinforced to prevent leaks. Complete with magnet & proper cleanup, tarps to protect windows and the ground below while tearing off shingles, and my new roof looks so aesthetically pleasing! Ryan let me pick out high quality shingles from Atlas Roofing & they booked me as soon as I was available and the weather was cooperative for winter (within 3 weeks of inquiring for a quote). 10/10, highly recommended! ”

“ I recently had a new roof installed by Malick Brothers. Clint and his team did a fantastic job, and I was really impressed with quality of work and attention to detail. I needed new step flashing in several areas that was affecting my chimney and siding. Clint provided me with expert advice on the repair and replacement process. And they also guided me through shingle selection. These guys do great work, very professional, honest and trustworthy. I highly recommend them! ”

Fox Chapel Roofing Questions
What Fox Chapel homeowners ask before a repair or a new roof.
Have you done roofs in Fox Chapel?
We haven't posted a finished Fox Chapel job yet, and we won't claim one. The jobs on this page are real work in nearby Allison Park, Glenshaw, Squirrel Hill and Morningside, and each one is labeled with its own town. You can see how a full job runs on our roof replacement page.
How far is your shop from Fox Chapel?
Our shop is at 500 Perry Highway, about 11 miles by road from the center of Fox Chapel and about 7.5 miles in a straight line. That's close enough for free inspections, follow up visits and quick repair calls. We already work every week in the North Hills communities between our shop and the borough. See every community we cover on our service areas page.
What drives the cost of a new roof on a large home?
The total area and pitch, the number of valleys, dormers and chimneys, the shingle line you pick, how much decking is rotted, whether old slate must come off first, and any low slope sections that need membrane. Access on wooded or sloped lots matters too. We give a free written estimate after an inspection, and our financing options can spread payments out. Our article on what goes into a new roof in Pittsburgh explains more.
Should I repair my slate roof or replace it?
It depends on the slate. Good stone can last far longer than the nails and flashing holding it, so a slate roof with sound tiles often just needs repairs at the flashing and a few replaced pieces. When many tiles are cracked or delaminating, replacement can make more sense. We look at the whole roof and tell you what we see. Read about slate roofing and roofing older Pittsburgh homes.
Why does my roof leak around the chimney?
Most chimney leaks we find come from worn or poorly installed step and counter flashing, not the shingles themselves. On a repair or replacement we install new flashing so water is turned away from the joint. Our roof repair page covers common leak points, and why valleys leak explains another frequent cause.
Can you handle a flat porch or addition roof too?
Yes. Shingles need slope to shed water, so flat or nearly flat porch roofs, additions and connectors need a membrane such as EPDM rubber. Our May 2025 job in Glenshaw paired Atlas shingles with a MuleHide EPDM section, and we rebuilt a porch roof in Morningside in October 2025. Learn more about EPDM rubber roofing and rubber roofing for low slope homes.
How do you protect landscaping on a large lot?
Before tear off we tarp walls, windows and plantings, keep the dumpster on the driveway where possible and sweep the yard with a magnet for nails when the day ends. On a large roof we plan where debris will come down so it lands on tarps, not in beds. Our article do gutters need to come off during a roof replacement covers that question.
Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first after a storm?
Make the house safe first and cover any opening if you can. Then have a roofer document the damage with photos and a written report before you file, so the adjuster sees what happened. We do that for homeowners and can meet the adjuster when asked. Read insurance or roofer first after storm damage, or book a free roof inspection.
