Black Shadow shingles are the color homeowners ask us about more than any other. Atlas makes Black Shadow in several lines, and the one we install most around Pittsburgh is Pinnacle Pristine, an architectural shingle with Scotchgard Protector built in. We have put Black Shadow roofs on brick homes in Bellevue, a frame house in Emsworth and a hillside home in Mt. Washington, so this guide is written from what we see on real streets, not from a sample board.
Below you will find what the color actually looks like on brick, siding and stone, which Pittsburgh house styles it suits, how Scotchgard keeps it from streaking, how the Atlas warranty works on a complete system, and photos of our own Black Shadow jobs. If you want the full product rundown first, our Atlas Pinnacle Pristine shingles page covers the whole color range and the system we build it into.
What Black Shadow Shingles Actually Look Like
Black Shadow is not a flat, single tone black. The granule blend mixes deep black with charcoal and a few dark gray flecks, so the roof reads as true black from the street but still shows the shadow lines between the laminated layers. That is the point of the name. On a bright day the color sits around a dark charcoal. On an overcast Pittsburgh afternoon, which is most of them from November through March, it reads as a solid black.
Pinnacle Pristine is cut on the wider Atlas HP42 format, so there are fewer visible seams and a longer, cleaner line across each course. On a dark color that matters, because any irregular pattern shows more on a black roof than on a brown blend. Two things change how the color appears on your house:
- Roof pitch. A steep roof faces you and shows more color. A low pitch mostly shows sky reflection and looks a shade lighter.
- Light and shade. Trees over the roof, a north facing slope or a tight city lot all push the color darker. A wide open South Hills or Cranberry lot will show more of the charcoal flecks.
Black Shadow on Brick, Siding and Stone
This is the question behind most of the calls we get about this color. Here is what we have seen on our own jobs around Allegheny County.
| Exterior | How Black Shadow pairs | Where we see it |
|---|---|---|
| Red or orange brick | Strong contrast that makes the brick look warmer and cleaner. The classic Pittsburgh combination. | Bellevue, Ben Avon, Ross Township, Mt. Washington |
| Tan or buff brick | Works well. The roof grounds the lighter brick and white trim pops. | McCandless, Shaler, Allison Park |
| White or light gray siding | The sharpest look. High contrast, modern, and it hides nothing, so the roof needs to be installed straight. | Newer homes in Cranberry Township, Mars, Franklin Park |
| Gray, blue or green siding | Easy match. Black trims almost any cool color. | Sewickley, Fox Chapel, Emsworth |
| Tan or beige siding | Good, but choose black or dark bronze gutters and fascia so the roof does not feel detached from the rest of the house. | 1990s and 2000s plans across the North Hills |
| Fieldstone or cultured stone | Excellent. Stone has gray and black in it already, so the roof ties into the veneer. | Fox Chapel, Sewickley Heights, custom homes in Pine |

The one pairing we steer people away from is very dark siding with a Black Shadow roof. A charcoal house with a black roof can look heavy in a tree lined neighborhood where it gets little direct light. If you want a dark house and a dark roof, plan on white or cream trim to break it up.
Which Pittsburgh House Styles Suit a Black Roof
Many of the homes we work on were built with slate or dark asphalt originally, so Black Shadow puts the house back the way it was designed to look.
Brick foursquares and Colonials
The two story brick homes that fill Bellevue, Avalon, Ben Avon and the older parts of Ross Township almost always look right in black. These houses had dark roofs when they were built, and a lighter blend can make them look washed out.
Cape Cods and ranches
The post war Capes and ranches in West View, Shaler and McCandless have a lot of roof visible from the street. Black Shadow makes the roof look lower and longer, which suits a ranch. On a Cape with dormers, it keeps the dormers from looking busy.
Tudor and stone homes
In Fox Chapel, Sewickley and Mt. Lebanon, the stone and stucco Tudors were built for slate. Black Shadow is the closest asphalt look to a dark slate roof, and it is often the color a homeowner picks when a slate roof has reached the end of its life and full slate replacement is not practical.
Newer colonials and farmhouse style builds
The white and light gray houses going up in Cranberry Township, Mars, Pine and Franklin Park are where Black Shadow has grown fastest. Black roof, white siding, black windows and black gutters is the look, and Black Shadow is the shingle that delivers it with an algae warranty behind it.
Scotchgard Protector: Why Black Shadow Stays Black
Every black roof in Western Pennsylvania faces the same enemy, and it is not the color. It is algae. Gloeocapsa magma is a blue green algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. It shows up as dark streaks running down the roof, usually on the north side and under trees. On a tan or gray roof the streaks look black. On a plain black roof they look like a dull, uneven gray film, and the roof loses the clean look you paid for within a few years.
Atlas Pinnacle Pristine shingles are made with 3M Scotchgard Protector. Copper containing granules are blended into the surface, and the copper releases slowly over the life of the roof to stop the algae from taking hold. According to Atlas, Scotchgard Protector has protected more than two million homes and is the reason the shingle carries its algae resistance warranty.
Our shop is in West View and most of our jobs sit under mature oaks and maples. Shade, moisture and leaf litter are exactly what algae likes, which is why we install Pinnacle Pristine rather than a plain black shingle without the copper granules. Black Shadow holds its color over time because of Scotchgard. A bargain black shingle without it will not.
Performance: Wind, Hail and Pittsburgh Weather
Pinnacle Pristine is a laminated architectural shingle, so it has two layers bonded together for weight and a shadow line. A few points from the manufacturer that matter here:
- Wind. Atlas publishes a wind warranty of up to 160 mph when Pinnacle Pristine is installed as part of a complete Atlas Signature Select roofing system. The old version of this post cited 130 mph. The higher figure applies to the full system, which is how we install it.
- Nailing. The HP42 format includes a wider Sweet Spot nailing zone and a double FASTAC sealant line. On a dark roof a mis nailed shingle lifts and shows, so the wider target helps on a windy day on a steep pitch.
- Heat and winter. A black roof absorbs more sun than a light one, but in Pittsburgh attic ventilation matters far more than shingle color, and ventilation is part of the system we install. A black roof sheds snow a little faster on sunny days; it does not change ice dam risk.

The Atlas 50 Year Warranty on a Complete System
Shingle warranties confuse people, so here is the short version. Buying Black Shadow shingles alone gets you the Atlas lifetime limited warranty on the shingle itself. The stronger coverage comes when the whole roof is built from Atlas components: Pinnacle Pristine shingles, Atlas underlayment, Atlas starter, Atlas hip and ridge and Atlas ventilation, installed by a contractor at the right certification level.
Malick Brothers Exteriors is an AtlasPro+ Platinum Select contractor. That level lets us register a complete Atlas roof system for the Atlas 50 year warranty, which covers the roof as a system rather than one product at a time. We install the full system on every Black Shadow roof we build, and we hand the homeowner the registration when the job closes. We also carry PA Home Improvement Contractor registration PA174918 and hold a BBB A plus rating, which you can confirm yourself before signing anything.
Ask any contractor quoting a Black Shadow roof two things: is every component Atlas, and what is their Atlas certification level. Mixed brand systems do not qualify, and the warranty tier depends on the installer.

These are our own jobs, photographed by our crew. We do not use stock photos of this color.
- Bellevue, May 2026. Full tear off and new Atlas Pinnacle Pristine roof in Black Shadow on a brick home, plus a silicone coating on the original built in box gutters. The photos at the top of this post and above are from this job. See more work in Bellevue.
- Emsworth, March 2026. Atlas Black Shadow roof on a frame home near the river. Installed in late March, which is typical for us. We do not wait for summer.
- Mt. Washington, April 2025. Black Shadow shingles on the main roof, MuleHide .060 EPDM on the low slope section and new copper chimney flashing. A good example of how a black shingle roof and a black rubber roof read as one color from the street.

Not Sure About Full Black? Nearby Atlas Colors
If you want a dark roof but Black Shadow feels like too much, Pewter is a medium to dark gray and Hearthstone Gray is a dark gray with some brown warmth that suits tan brick. We bring full size sample boards to every estimate and hold them against your brick or siding in daylight. Pick the color outside, never in the kitchen. The color itself does not change the estimate; roof size, pitch, layers to remove and decking repairs do, and financing is available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Black Shadow a true black or a dark gray?
It reads as black from the street. Up close the granule blend has charcoal and dark gray flecks mixed with black, which is what gives the shingle depth and keeps the roof from looking like a flat sheet. In shade or on an overcast day it looks solid black. In full sun on a low pitch it leans toward charcoal.
Will a black roof make my Pittsburgh house hotter?
Not in any way you will notice if the attic is vented properly. A roof with ridge vent and open soffit intake stays close to the same temperature regardless of color. If your upstairs is hot now, the fix is ventilation and insulation, not a lighter shingle. We check the attic on every estimate.
Do Black Shadow shingles show algae streaks?
Plain black shingles without copper granules do. They develop a dull gray film and streaks within a few years under Pittsburgh trees. Atlas Pinnacle Pristine Black Shadow is made with 3M Scotchgard Protector, which releases copper slowly to stop algae, and Atlas backs it with an algae resistance warranty. That is why we install this shingle and not a bargain black.
What color gutters go with Black Shadow?
Black or dark bronze gutters disappear into the roof line and give the cleanest look, especially on white or light siding. White gutters work on brick homes with white trim. We install 5 and 6 inch seamless gutters in white, black and almond, so we can match either direction. See our gutter services for details.
How long does a Black Shadow roof last?
The color does not change the lifespan. A Pinnacle Pristine roof installed as a full Atlas system with proper ventilation is a 25 to 30 year roof in Western Pennsylvania under normal conditions, and the system warranty runs longer than that. What shortens roof life here is poor ventilation, bad flashing and trees scraping the surface, not the shingle color.
