Atlas Pewter shingles are the color Pittsburgh homeowners ask us about more than any other gray. Pewter is a medium charcoal gray blend in the Atlas Pinnacle Pristine line, and it is one of the colors we install most often from our shop on Perry Highway in West View. This page covers what Pewter actually looks like on a roof, which brick, siding and stone colors it pairs with, which local house styles it suits, how Scotchgard Protector keeps it free of black streaks, and how the Atlas 50 year warranty works on a complete system. It also shows real Pewter roofs we installed in Observatory Hill and Butler.

If you are comparing shingle lines first, our Atlas Pinnacle Pristine shingles page explains the product itself. This post is about the color.

What color are Atlas Pewter shingles?

Pewter is a true gray, not a blue gray and not a brown gray. Each shingle carries a blend of charcoal, slate gray and lighter silver granules, so the roof reads as a medium to dark gray from the street while still showing depth up close. In full sun it looks lighter and more silver. On an overcast Pittsburgh day, which is most days from November through March, it settles into a deeper charcoal.

Pewter sits between the two other popular grays in the Pinnacle Pristine line:

  • Black Shadow is darker, closer to black, with less visible blend.
  • Pewter is the middle gray, with clear light and dark granules.
  • Oyster Shell is the lightest, a pale gray with warm undertones.

Because it is a neutral gray with no strong undertone, Pewter is the safest Atlas color to pick when you are not sure what will match. It does not fight with brick, it does not clash with warm or cool siding, and it does not date the house.

Pewter on brick, siding and stone

Most of the houses we roof in the North Hills and the city neighborhoods have one of three exteriors. Here is how Pewter works with each.

Red and orange brick

Pewter is our first recommendation for the red brick homes in Ross Township, Bellevue, Observatory Hill and Brighton Heights. A medium gray roof lets the brick stay the warm focal point of the house. Darker roofs such as Black Shadow can make a small brick house look top heavy, and brown roofs such as Burnt Hickory can blend into the brick and flatten the whole front. Pewter gives contrast without competing.

Vinyl, James Hardie and Mastic siding

Pewter works with nearly every siding color we install:

  • White, cream and light gray siding: the classic combination. The roof frames the house and the trim stays crisp.
  • Navy, slate blue and dark green siding: Pewter keeps the look cool and modern. This is the pairing we see most on newer homes in Cranberry Township and Mars.
  • Tan, khaki and clay siding: Pewter adds a cooler note that keeps the house from looking all one tone.
  • Dark gray or charcoal siding: we usually steer homeowners toward Oyster Shell or Weathered Wood instead, because Pewter on charcoal siding can look like one block of gray.

If you are replacing the roof and the siding in the same project, bring the siding sample to the roof color meeting. We lay the shingle on the sample in daylight, not under shop lights.

Stone and stone veneer

Fieldstone, ledgestone and the mixed gray and tan stone veneers common in Fox Chapel and Sewickley already carry gray in them. Pewter picks up that gray and ties the roof to the foundation and chimney. On a house with a tan and gray stone front and cream siding, Pewter is the color that pulls all three together.

Which Pittsburgh house styles suit Pewter

Pewter is close in tone to the slate roofs that covered most of Pittsburgh before 1940, which is why it looks right on older houses. Styles where we install it most:

  • Brick four squares and Colonials in the city and the inner North Hills. Pewter reads like the slate these houses originally had.
  • Tudor and Craftsman homes in Mt. Lebanon, Highland Park and Ben Avon, where a gray roof suits the stone and stucco details.
  • 1950s and 1960s ranches and split levels in McCandless, Shaler and Allison Park. A medium gray roof on a long low roofline looks cleaner than black.
  • Newer two story homes in Cranberry, Franklin Park and Marshall with dark siding accents and white trim.

Pewter also hides dust, pollen and the pale streaks that rain leaves on darker roofs, so it stays looking clean between cleanings.

Scotchgard Protector: no black streaks on your gray roof

The dark streaks you see on older roofs around Pittsburgh are not dirt. They are a blue green algae called Gloeocapsa magma that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. Our humid summers and the shade from mature trees on streets in Bellevue, Avalon and Shaler give it everything it needs. On a gray roof the streaks show more than on black, so algae resistance matters more when you pick Pewter.

Atlas Pinnacle Pristine shingles are made with 3M Scotchgard Protector. The copper granules are blended through the whole surface of the shingle rather than scattered in stripes, so the protection covers the entire roof and does not wear off in patches. Atlas backs it with an algae resistance limited warranty on the shingle. In practice that means the Pewter you picked in the showroom is the Pewter you still see in year ten.

Wind, hail and the Pittsburgh winter

Pinnacle Pristine is a High Performance 42 inch shingle. The wider format means fewer seams per square, a larger nailing zone that Atlas calls the Sweet Spot, and a double FASTAC sealant line that bonds the shingle courses together. Atlas lists Class 3 impact resistance and a wind limited warranty of 130 mph on a standard installation, rising to 160 mph when the shingle is installed as part of a complete Atlas Signature Select roofing system.

Those numbers matter here. The wind that comes down the Ohio River valley and over the ridges in Ross and McCandless peels poorly sealed shingles every spring. We install Pinnacle Pristine with six nails per shingle, Atlas starter strips at the eaves and rakes, and ice and water shield at every eave, valley and penetration, which the Pennsylvania residential code requires in our climate zone. The sealant line needs warm weather to bond, so on roofs we install in winter we hand seal the exposed edges.

The Atlas 50 year warranty on a complete system

The shingle on its own carries the Atlas Lifetime Limited Warranty. The coverage homeowners actually want comes from installing a complete system. We are an AtlasPro+ Platinum Select contractor, which lets us register the Atlas Signature Select roofing system warranty on every full replacement where we install:

  • Atlas Pinnacle Pristine shingles in Pewter or any other color
  • Atlas synthetic underlayment
  • Atlas ice and water barrier
  • Atlas starter shingles
  • Atlas hip and ridge cap shingles in matching Pewter
  • Atlas ridge ventilation

With all of those components in place, the roof is covered by the Atlas 50 year warranty on complete Atlas systems, with the manufacturer standing behind both materials and installation during the premium protection period. A contractor who buys the shingle at a box store and mixes in other brands of underlayment and ridge vent cannot offer this. Ask any roofer quoting Pewter to show you the registered warranty certificate from a recent job.

Real Atlas Pewter roofs we have installed

These are three of the Pewter jobs from the past two seasons. Each one is a complete Atlas system installed by our own crew, not a subcontractor.

Location Date Scope
Observatory Hill, Pittsburgh April 2025 Atlas Pinnacle Pristine in Pewter on the main roof, MuleHide 2 ply low slope system on the flat rear section
Sewickley July 2025 Full Atlas Pewter roof replacement
Butler October 2025 Full Atlas Pewter roof replacement with new seamless gutters

The Observatory Hill house is a good example of why Pewter suits city neighborhoods. It is a brick home with a flat rear addition, so the shingle roof and the low slope rubber roof meet at a wall. Pewter and the black EPDM read as one dark roofline from the alley instead of two mismatched materials. You can see more work by town on our service areas page.

How to see Pewter before you commit

  1. Look at a full roof, not a sample board. A single shingle in your hand always looks darker than the finished roof. Ask us for addresses of Pewter roofs near you and drive past in the morning and again in the late afternoon.
  2. Hold the sample against your brick or siding outdoors. Lighting changes everything. Never choose from a photo on a phone.
  3. Match the ridge cap and the gutters. We install Pewter hip and ridge caps so the peaks match the field. For seamless gutters, charcoal, dark bronze or white all work with Pewter depending on the trim color.
  4. Check the roof you have first. If your current roof is only leaking in one place, a roof inspection may show that a repair makes more sense than a replacement this year.

Frequently asked questions

Is Atlas Pewter the same as Pewter Gray?

Atlas sells Pewter in the Pinnacle Pristine line and a similar shade called Pewter Gray in the Pinnacle Impact line, which is the Class 4 impact rated version. Both are medium charcoal gray blends. Older listings and some supply houses still label the Pinnacle Pristine color as Pewter Grey or Pristine Pewter. They all refer to the same gray family, so confirm the product line with your roofer before ordering.

Does a gray roof like Pewter make the house hotter?

A medium gray roof absorbs a little less heat than a black roof, but on a Pittsburgh house the difference you feel inside comes from attic ventilation and insulation, not shingle color. We install ridge vents and check the intake at the soffits on every replacement. With proper airflow a Pewter roof performs the same in July as a lighter color.

Is Pewter a good choice for resale?

Yes. Gray is the roof color homeowners ask us for most often, and it suits the brick and stone that dominate Pittsburgh housing. A neutral gray roof does not limit the siding or paint colors a future owner can choose, which matters when a roof needs to be replaced before a sale.

How long will Pewter keep its color?

The granules on Pinnacle Pristine shingles are ceramic coated, and Scotchgard Protector stops the algae streaks that make most roofs look old before their time. Expect some gentle lightening over decades in full sun, which is normal for any asphalt shingle.

Can I get Pewter on a low slope or flat section?

Shingles need at least a 2 in 12 pitch, and we recommend 4 in 12 or steeper for full warranty coverage. For the flat porch and addition roofs common on Pittsburgh homes, we pair Pewter shingles with a black MuleHide EPDM or two ply low slope system, as we did in Observatory Hill. The two materials meet cleanly and look like one roof from the ground.

What underlayment goes under Pewter shingles?

For the full Atlas system warranty we use Atlas synthetic underlayment over the whole deck and Atlas ice and water barrier at eaves, valleys, chimneys and skylights. The underlayment is never visible once the roof is done, but it is what keeps a wind driven rain or an ice dam from reaching your decking.
