New Atlas shingle roof installed by Malick Brothers Exteriors in Ross Township
June 14, 2023

Atlas Morning Harvest is the shingle color we get asked about more than almost any other, and for good reason. It is a warm golden brown blend from the Atlas Natural Expressions palette, and on a Pittsburgh house it reads like late afternoon sun on a field. We install it on Atlas Pinnacle Pristine shingles, and we have put it on homes in Ross Township, Allison Park and across the North Hills. This page covers what the color actually looks like on brick, siding and stone, which local house styles it suits, the algae protection and warranty that come with it, and real Malick Brothers Morning Harvest roofs you can look at before you decide.

What Atlas Morning Harvest looks like

Morning Harvest is a multi tone architectural shingle. Each shingle carries a blend of golden tan, medium brown, soft ochre and a scattering of darker granules. From the street the roof reads as a warm medium brown with lighter highlights. In direct sun the gold comes forward. Under cloud cover, which is most of a Pittsburgh year, the brown settles in and the roof looks richer and a little darker than the sample board suggests.

Atlas lists Morning Harvest as a Pinnacle Pristine color, part of the Natural Expressions group that Atlas describes with the phrase "golden light". The other colors in that group are Coastal Granite, Copper Canyon, Oyster Shell and Summer Storm. If you are comparing, Morning Harvest is warmer and lighter than Weathered Wood, warmer and more golden than Burnt Hickory, and much lighter than Copper Canyon, which leans red.

Two things we tell every homeowner. First, always look at a full size shingle on the roof or against the house, never a swatch under showroom lights. Second, look at it on a gray day. If you still like it then, you will like it for 30 years.

Morning Harvest on brick, siding and stone

A shingle color only works if it agrees with the walls below it. Here is how Morning Harvest behaves with the exteriors we see most around Pittsburgh.

Red and orange brick

This is the best pairing we know for Morning Harvest. The warm brown in the shingle picks up the clay in the brick, and the gold highlights keep the whole house from feeling heavy. On the 1920s to 1950s brick homes in Ross Township, West View, Bellevue and Brookline the result looks like it was always meant to be there. Black or charcoal shingles on red brick can look stark; Morning Harvest looks settled.

Tan, buff and blonde brick

Also strong. The roof reads a shade darker than the brick, which gives the house a clear top and bottom. Pair it with white or cream trim and dark brown or bronze gutters.

Vinyl or fiber cement siding

Morning Harvest works with warm neutrals: cream, almond, clay, sage, olive, warm gray and most tans. It also works with white siding and dark trim. It fights with cool colors. Blue gray, slate blue and icy white siding want a gray or black roof, not a golden brown one. If you are planning new siding at the same time, we will bring shingle and siding samples together so you can see them side by side.

Stone and cultured stone

Pennsylvania fieldstone and most cultured stone blends carry tan, brown and gray. Morning Harvest picks up the tan and brown tones and lets the gray read as an accent. On a stone fronted split level or a stone and siding colonial it is one of the safest choices on the Atlas color card.

Trim, gutters and doors

Cream, almond and white trim all work. For seamless gutters we usually recommend brown, musket brown or almond rather than white so the gutter line disappears into the roof edge. Dark green, black and oxblood front doors all look good under this roof.

Which Pittsburgh house styles suit it

  • Brick colonials and foursquares: the classic match. Most of our Morning Harvest jobs are on this kind of house.
  • 1950s and 1960s ranches and split levels: the long low roof shows a lot of shingle, so a warm blended color like this one adds interest where a flat black roof would look like a parking lot.
  • Cape Cods: steep roofs that face the street. The color blend reads well from the sidewalk.
  • Craftsman and bungalow: earth tone exteriors were designed for roofs like this.
  • Newer North Hills colonials and two story homes in Cranberry, Mars and Franklin Park: excellent with tan or clay siding and stone accents.

Where we steer people away: modern farmhouse exteriors with bright white board and batten and black windows. Those want a black or charcoal roof. We would rather tell you that up front than install a roof you second guess.

Scotchgard Protector and why it matters here

The black streaks you see on older roofs around Pittsburgh are not dirt. They are a blue green algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles, and our humid summers and shaded, tree lined streets give it everything it needs. Lighter and warmer shingle colors show those streaks more than black ones do, so algae resistance is not a luxury on a Morning Harvest roof. It is the whole reason the color stays the color.

Every Pinnacle Pristine shingle, Morning Harvest included, is made with 3M Scotchgard Protector. Copper bearing granules with a porous ceramic coating are mixed into the surface, and the coating releases copper ions slowly over the life of the roof. Algae cannot establish on the surface, so the roof does not streak. This is built into the shingle at the factory, not sprayed on afterward, and the protection is covered under the Atlas warranty.

The Atlas warranty on a complete system

Pinnacle Pristine carries the Atlas Lifetime Limited Warranty on the shingle itself. The warranty most homeowners actually want, though, is the one on the whole roof, and that depends on who installs it and what goes on underneath.

Malick Brothers is an AtlasPro+ Platinum Select contractor. When we install a complete Atlas system, meaning Atlas shingles with Atlas underlayment, starter, hip and ridge and ventilation components, the roof qualifies for the Atlas 50 year warranty on the system. That coverage is only available through contractors at our level, which is why we build every Morning Harvest roof as a full system rather than mixing in whatever is cheapest at the supply house. Wind coverage also steps up on a complete system, with Atlas listing wind resistance up to 160 mph when the Signature Select system is installed. The warranty paperwork is registered after the job and the certificate goes to you.

Two honest notes. Pinnacle Pristine is rated Class 3 for impact, not Class 4. If hail is your concern, ask us about Atlas impact resistant options. And no warranty from any manufacturer covers poor installation, so the nailing, flashing and ventilation are on us. Our roof replacement process is documented in photos from tear off to the last ridge cap, and you get those photos.

A few practical details

  • Pinnacle Pristine is a wide format shingle built on the Atlas HP42 platform, with a nominal 14 by 42 inch size and a 6 inch exposure. The wider shingle means fewer seams and a cleaner look on big roof planes.
  • Each bundle covers about 32.8 square feet, so roughly three bundles cover one roofing square of 100 square feet. We measure and order, you do not have to.
  • The shingle has a Class A fire rating and the HP42 Sweet Spot nailing area, which gives the installer a larger target and fewer high or low nails.
  • Matching Atlas Pro Cut hip and ridge shingles come in Morning Harvest, so ridges and hips match instead of standing out.
  • Cost depends on roof size, pitch, number of layers coming off, decking condition and how much flashing and ventilation work the roof needs. We give a free written estimate with every option spelled out, and financing is available.

Frequently asked questions

Is Atlas Morning Harvest a brown or a gold shingle?

It is a brown blend with gold highlights. From across the street it reads as a warm medium brown. In full sun the golden granules show and the roof looks lighter. It is not an orange roof and it is not a flat tan. If you want a true gold, there is no architectural shingle that does that; if you want a warm brown with life in it, this is the one.

Which Atlas shingle line comes in Morning Harvest?

Atlas offers Morning Harvest in the Pinnacle Pristine architectural line, which is the line we install most. Pinnacle Pristine includes Scotchgard Protector algae resistance, the HP42 wide format and the Atlas Lifetime Limited Warranty, and it qualifies for the Atlas 50 year system warranty when we install it as a complete Atlas system.

Does Morning Harvest show algae streaks?

Lighter warm colors would show streaking more than black shingles if they streaked, which is exactly why Atlas builds Scotchgard Protector into every Pinnacle Pristine shingle. The copper granules stop algae from taking hold, so the color you pick is the color you keep. We have not had a Morning Harvest roof come back to us with streaking.

What roof color increases home value?

The color that matches the house. Appraisers and buyers respond to a roof that looks correct for the brick, siding and style, and to a roof that is new and warrantied. On the warm brick and tan siding common in the North Hills, Morning Harvest fits that description. On a white modern farmhouse, a black roof would serve you better.

Which Atlas shingle is considered the best?

For most Pittsburgh homes we recommend Pinnacle Pristine because it balances a wide shingle, strong wind performance, algae protection and warranty. Atlas StormMaster Shake is the step up for a heavier shake look and impact resistance. The best shingle is the one installed as a complete system by a certified contractor, because that is what unlocks the 50 year coverage.

Can I see a Morning Harvest roof in person before I commit?

Yes. We have installed it in Ross Township, Allison Park and other North Hills neighborhoods and we are glad to give you addresses to drive past, with the homeowner's permission. We also bring full size sample shingles to every estimate so you can hold the real thing against your brick or siding.
