Atlas Tan Mist is one of the most requested shingle colors we install in the North Hills, and it is easy to see why. It is a warm, light tan blend from the Atlas Pinnacle Pristine line that reads as neutral from the street, flatters the red brick and beige siding that fill Pittsburgh neighborhoods, and hides dust and pollen better than a dark roof does. This guide covers what Tan Mist looks like in real daylight, which house styles and exterior colors it suits, and what you get from the shingle itself: Scotchgard algae protection, Class 3 impact resistance, and the Atlas 50 year warranty we can offer as an AtlasPro+ Platinum contractor.
We are Malick Brothers Exteriors, a family owned roofing company based at 500 Perry Highway in West View. We install Atlas Pinnacle Pristine shingles as complete Atlas systems, which is what unlocks the longest warranty Atlas offers. If you are weighing Tan Mist against Weathered Wood, Pewter or Morning Harvest, this page should answer most of your questions before we ever come out for a free written estimate.
What Atlas Tan Mist looks like
Tan Mist sits in the brown color family in Atlas and distributor catalogs, but on a roof it looks lighter than that label suggests. The base granules are a soft sandy tan, with darker brown and gray shadow granules scattered through each shingle. Because Pinnacle Pristine is an architectural (laminated) shingle, those darker tones fall along the lower edge of each tab and create the dimensional, staggered look people expect from a modern roof.
Three things to know before you commit to a sample board:
- It shifts with the light. In full afternoon sun Tan Mist looks pale and creamy. On an overcast Pittsburgh day, which is most days from November through March, it deepens into a warm khaki with more visible brown shading.
- It is not yellow. Some tan shingles from other brands lean gold. Tan Mist has enough gray in the blend to stay neutral, which is why it works next to both warm and cool trim colors.
- It is lighter than Weathered Wood. Weathered Wood is the mid brown most people picture when they say "brown roof." Tan Mist is a full step lighter and brighter, so it brightens a house instead of grounding it.
Tan Mist on brick, siding and stone
A roof is roughly a third of what you see from the curb, so the color has to agree with everything below it. Here is how Tan Mist behaves against the exteriors we see most often across Ross Township, McCandless, Shaler and the rest of the North Hills.
Red and orange brick
This is where Tan Mist earns its reputation. The 1920s through 1960s brick homes in Bellevue, Ben Avon, West View and Mt. Lebanon have warm clay tones that fight with gray roofs and disappear under dark brown ones. Tan Mist picks up the lighter mortar lines and lets the brick stay the star.
Beige, tan and clay siding
Tone on tone works if you keep the contrast in the trim. A beige vinyl ranch in Allison Park with a Tan Mist roof and white fascia, soffit and gutters reads as calm and well kept. If the siding is a darker clay or khaki, the roof will look a shade lighter than the walls, which is the right direction.
White and light gray siding
Tan Mist softens a white house that would otherwise look stark under a black roof. Against light gray siding it introduces warmth without clashing, as long as the gray is a warm gray (greige). Cool, blue leaning grays look better under Pewter or Weathered Shadow, and we will tell you that on the sample visit.
Stone and cultured stone
Most of the stone veneer on newer homes in Cranberry Township, Franklin Park and Mars is a mix of tan, cream and brown. Tan Mist repeats those exact tones on the roof, which ties a stone and siding combination together.
Dark siding (navy, charcoal, forest green)
Dark walls with a light roof is a strong, intentional look that is common on newer builds and on James Hardie resides. Tan Mist gives a dark body color a warm cap instead of a cold one. We install James Hardie and Mastic siding, so if the roof and siding are being replaced together we can set the two sample boards side by side on your lawn.
Which Pittsburgh house styles suit Tan Mist
Color advice that ignores the house is useless, so here is how we think about it by style:
- Brick colonials and Cape Cods (North Hills, South Hills, East End): an easy yes. The warm roof matches the era and the brick.
- Post war ranches and split levels (Ross, Shaler, McCandless, Allison Park): a strong choice, especially with beige or white siding. The light roof keeps a low, wide house from looking squat.
- Craftsman bungalows and foursquares (Bellevue, Ben Avon, Morningside, Dormont): works well with earthy body colors such as olive, clay and warm gray. Pair with a darker fascia for contrast on the deep eaves.
- Newer two story homes with stone accents (Cranberry, Mars, Franklin Park, Sewickley Hills): very popular. Tan Mist ties stone, siding and trim together.
- Modern farmhouse (white board and batten, black windows): this is the one style where we usually steer people to Black Shadow or Pewter instead. Tan Mist is a fine roof there, but it softens a look that is built on contrast.
If your house falls somewhere between these, send us a photo and we will tell you honestly which Atlas colors we would put on it.
Scotchgard Protector: why a light roof stays light
The biggest worry people have about a tan roof is black streaking. Those streaks are a blue green algae called Gloeocapsa magma, and it thrives in Pittsburgh's shade, humidity and long damp springs. On a dark roof you barely notice it. On a light roof it shows up in a few seasons and ruins the color you paid for.
Every Pinnacle Pristine shingle, Tan Mist included, is made with 3M Scotchgard Protector. Copper containing granules are blended into the surface across the whole shingle, not just in a stripe, and the copper ions released by rain stop the algae from taking hold. Atlas states the technology has protected more than 2 million homes, and it is the single most important reason we recommend Pinnacle Pristine specifically when a customer wants a light color. You can read the manufacturer's own description on the Atlas Pinnacle Pristine product page.
Scotchgard does not make a roof self cleaning. Keep the gutters flowing and trim limbs that shade the roof. Our 5 and 6 inch seamless gutters and periodic roof inspections are the cheap insurance that keeps a Tan Mist roof looking new.
Performance behind the color
Tan Mist is a color, not a product tier, so you get the same shingle construction as every other Pinnacle Pristine color:
- Class 3 impact resistance (UL 2218), which matters for the hail we get in late spring thunderstorms.
- HP42 technology: a wider 42 inch shingle with Atlas's Sweet Spot nailing area, so our crews have more room to place every nail correctly.
- Double FASTAC sealant line, which bonds each course to the one below and is the reason Atlas backs the shingle for winds up to 130 mph on its own, and up to 160 mph when installed as a complete Atlas Signature Select roofing system.
- Lifetime limited warranty on the shingle itself from Atlas.
One correction to an older version of this post: Tan Mist is a Pinnacle Pristine color, not a Pinnacle Sun color. Pinnacle Sun is a separate Atlas line with reflective 3M Cool Roofing Granules.
The Atlas 50 year warranty on a complete system
The lifetime shingle warranty is fine, but it is not the warranty we talk about with customers. Malick Brothers is an AtlasPro+ Platinum contractor. That standing lets us register a complete Atlas roof system, meaning Atlas shingles, Atlas underlayment, Atlas starter and hip and ridge, and Atlas ventilation installed to spec, for the Atlas 50 year system warranty. The enhanced system coverage includes non prorated labor and materials, tear off and disposal, and the full product system, and it is transferable, which helps when you sell the house.
That warranty is the reason we do not mix brands on a roof. Mixed components only carry the base shingle warranty. When we quote a full roof replacement in Tan Mist, the complete Atlas system and the registration paperwork are part of the job, and we spell that out in writing before you sign.
Tan Mist compared with other popular Atlas colors
| Atlas color | Overall tone | Best with | Pick it over Tan Mist when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tan Mist | Light warm tan with brown and gray shadows | Red brick, beige, cream, stone, dark siding | You want a bright, neutral roof that hides dust |
| Weathered Wood | Mid brown with gray | Almost any siding color | You want a safe, traditional brown that is darker than Tan Mist |
| Pewter | Medium cool gray | Blue, gray, white siding | Your exterior leans cool rather than warm |
| Black Shadow | Deep charcoal black | White, light gray, modern farmhouse | You want maximum contrast |
| Morning Harvest | Warm golden brown blend | Tan, cream, earth tone siding | You want more warmth and visual texture than Tan Mist |
| Burnt Hickory | Rich reddish brown | Cream, white, green | You want the roof to be a feature color |
We have installed every color in that table across the North Hills in the past year, including Morning Harvest in Allison Park and Ross Township, Black Shadow in Bellevue and Emsworth, Burnt Hickory in Ben Avon and Weathered Wood in Squirrel Hill. Ask for addresses near you and we will point you to a roof you can drive past, which beats any sample board.
Frequently asked questions about Atlas Tan Mist
Is Atlas Tan Mist brown or tan?
Atlas and roofing distributors file Tan Mist under the brown color family, but on a house it reads as a light tan. The blend is sandy tan with darker brown and gray accent granules. If you want a roof that is clearly brown, Weathered Wood or Burnt Hickory is a better match. If you want light and neutral, Tan Mist is the one.
Does a light colored roof like Tan Mist get algae stains?
Any light roof shows algae faster than a dark one, which is why we only install light colors in lines that have full coverage algae protection. Pinnacle Pristine Tan Mist uses 3M Scotchgard Protector with copper granules blended across the entire shingle to stop the black streaks that plague older tan roofs around Pittsburgh.
What is the warranty on Atlas Tan Mist shingles?
The shingle carries the Atlas lifetime limited warranty and a wind warranty of 130 mph, rising to 160 mph as part of a complete Atlas system. Because we are an AtlasPro+ Platinum contractor, a full Atlas system we install can be registered for the Atlas 50 year warranty, which covers labor and materials without proration and transfers to a new owner.
Is Tan Mist available in other Atlas lines?
Tan Mist is a Pinnacle Pristine color. Other Atlas lines such as StormMaster Shake, Pinnacle Impact and Pinnacle Sun have their own color lists, and some share names like Weathered Wood but not Tan Mist. If you like the look and want Class 4 impact resistance, ask us about the closest match in Pinnacle Impact.
Does Tan Mist work with black gutters and trim?
Yes. Black fascia and gutters give Tan Mist a crisp outline and look especially sharp on brick and on dark sided homes. White trim gives a softer, more traditional look and is the most common pairing on ranches and colonials. We install both in 5 and 6 inch seamless aluminum.
